Ehren

Present Day.

Ehren Kuhn’s face distorted and his mouth opened wide as a yawn escaped from deep in his lungs. He had awoken from a much needed nap. He was surprised that he had been able to sleep. The events of the day had really worn him out.

Abarron had said that he would come for them when the storm weakened. Perhaps the storm had been worse than first thought. He looked over at his children napping on the cot next to he and his wife, wondering if he should wake them to go to the bathroom. Charlie was a bedwetter.

The cot squeaked as he sat up, awaking his wife. “I’ll be right back,” he whispered. Ehren walked outside of the tent. There was a guard waiting outside of the opening.

“Abarron would like to see you,” he said.

Ehren nodded and followed him to an open canopy.

“Mr. Kuhn,” Abarron said as he approached.

“Ehren, please.” Ehren replied.

“Ehren, I thought you and your family might need some time to rest after yesterday’s events. My men are ready to transport you to a safe location.”

“Safe? Will we actually be safe from here on out? I have my children to think about.”

“Yes, you do. That is why I wanted to meet with you, alone, before you left. We’ve done some research. You have quite an impressive military background.”

“Why did you look me up? Did you think I was not who I said I was?”

“No, we believed you. You are an honest man. However, you are not a part of an honest organization.”

“This coming from a rebel faction.”

“I detect a note of detest in your statement. I can’t say I didn’t expect it. The IMO has filled the citizen’s heads with lies.”

“But, the reports.”

“All lies. Do you know why we fight?”

Ehren waited.

“We fight for peace, for survival and for our rights.”

Ehren looked down.

“From the time you saw us land in Austria until now, what wrong have we done? The IMO calls the dissenters killers. We only killed to save your family and even then, our intention was only to wound and not kill.”

Abarron switched on a monitor in front of Ehren. “You live in an IMO safe zone. You have no idea what is happening outside of the IMO cities or safe zones. Take a look.” He handed him the hand-held monitor. “Tap the screen on the right to view video footage from the time the Emperor took office until now. Then, tell me who the real killers are.”
